Aortic Valve Replacement: Medicover Hospitals Successfully Performs

Aortic Valve Replacement

Aortic Valve Replacement: Mr. Om Prakash Prasad, a 59-year-old from Bihar, was battling severe heart failure and had been seeking treatment at various hospitals. He was diagnosed with low-flow, low-gradient aortic stenosis (LF LG AS), a rare and life-threatening heart condition. With his heart’s pumping capacity reduced to just 19% (compared to the normal 65%), he was deemed a candidate for a heart transplant. However, the complexity of his case left hospitals hesitant to proceed with surgery.

Finally, he approached Dr. Sudheer, Consultant Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon (CTVS) at Medicover Hospitals, Begumpet. After an extensive evaluation, Dr. Sudheer determined the situation was critical, with only a 10% chance of survival. Despite the challenges, he and his team performed an aortic valve replacement surgery on October 23, 2024.

During the procedure, complications like heart weakening, valve degradation, and low myocardial function were encountered. However, with precise intervention and expertise, the surgery was successfully completed. Post-operative care involved ventilator support for 48 hours, gradual weaning off heart medications, and meticulous ICU management. Within 72 hours, Mr. Prasad stabilized, and after a seven-day ICU stay, he showed remarkable improvement, being discharged on the tenth day.

Dr. Sudheer emphasized the importance of timely diagnosis and advanced treatment in complex heart failure cases. He acknowledged the vital contributions of Cardiologist Dr. Saketh, Anesthesiologist Dr. Manasa, Center Head Dr. Raj Kumar, and Medical Superintendent Abhilash. Good intraoperative cardiac anesthesia care, excellent post-operative ICU management, and allied services like physiotherapy, nutrition, blood bank services, pharmacy, and infection control were crucial for the patient’s recovery.

Mr. Prasad expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “After visiting multiple hospitals, I was told the procedure was impossible. Dr. Sudheer and Medicover Hospitals gave me a new lease on life.” Dr. Raj Kumar commended the team’s remarkable efforts, noting that advanced facilities and an experienced team were key to achieving this milestone.
