PM to visit J&K: Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Sonamarg in Jammu & Kashmir on 13th January for the inauguration of the Sonamarg Tunnel project. The visit will commence at 11:45 AM, with the Prime Minister inspecting the tunnel, followed by its formal inauguration and an address to the gathering.

Key Highlights of the Sonamarg Tunnel Project:

  • Length: Approximately 12 km, including the 6.4 km-long main tunnel, an egress tunnel, and approach roads.
  • Cost: Constructed at a cost of over ₹2,700 crore.
  • Altitude: Located at over 8,650 feet above sea level.
  • Benefits:
    • Ensures all-weather connectivity between Srinagar and Sonamarg en route to Leh.
    • Bypasses landslide and avalanche-prone routes for safer travel.
    • Enhances strategic access to the Ladakh region.
    • Boosts tourism by transforming Sonamarg into a year-round destination, with opportunities for winter tourism and adventure sports.
    • Drives economic growth by supporting local livelihoods.

Strategic Importance:

  • Along with the Zojila Tunnel (targeted for completion by 2028), it will:
    • Shorten the route from 49 km to 43 km.
    • Increase vehicle speeds from 30 km/hr to 70 km/hr.
    • Strengthen NH-1 connectivity between the Srinagar Valley and Ladakh.
    • Enhance defense logistics and promote socio-economic integration.

The Prime Minister will also interact with the construction workers who persevered under harsh conditions to achieve this engineering milestone, recognizing their dedication and contribution to the project.
