Launching a scathing attack on the Odisha government over the death of the girl student, the President of All India Mahila Congress, Alka Lamba has demanded the resignation of Odisha chief minister Mohan Charan Majhi and imposition of President’s rule in the state.
Lamba,in a press conference held at Congress Bhawan, said that Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has been expressing outrage on social media for two days on the suicide of Soumyashree. This morning, he spoke with Soumyashree’s family too.
The leader of opposition in Lok Sabha,Rahul Gandhi, attacking on the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) over the incident, had said, “The death of the daughter fighting for justice in Odisha is nothing less than a murder by the BJP system.”
Lamba highlighted that Congress MLAs had previously raised the issue of increasing atrocities against women in the Odisha Assembly, demanding discussions on women’s safety, but they were expelled from the Assembly. Now, at Fakir Mohan College, Soumyashree faced sexual harassment and though she informed everyone, the government remained silent,Lamba stated.
“Odisha has become a death trap for women”, she alleged.
Coning down heavily on the Prime Minister Modi, Ms. Lamba said that he appears unconcerned and has not written a single line on social media on the issue. While the President has expressed concern, the Chief Minister, Union Education Minister, State Higher Education Minister, MPs, and MLAs, despite being aware, have remained silent and took no action, she said.
“This inaction forced the girl to take her own life”,Lamba added.
She added that 40,000 women are missing in Odisha, and if the Prime Minister had met the girl, she might not have died. The issue of atrocities against women in Odisha has shaken the entire country, she expressed.
Ms. Lamba noted that crimes against women have increased in nine BJP-ruled states, including Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh, and Odisha. In Odisha, the police are hesitant to take action due to rising political interference and pressure, she expressed.
She said,”The Mahila Congress will reach out to every district and assembly constituency, to take the fight until stop on women atrocities. The struggle will continue right from the streets to the floor of the Parliament”.
Ms. Lamba urged the people of Odisha to support the bandh call given by the congress and eight other political parties on July 17, to observe the bandh peaceful;ly by coming out in large numbers.
She said,”The government could have prevented these crimes,if it wanted to, but it has done nothing. Forming committees now is merely a drama, as no report has been submitted in the KIT case so far, and the girl’s life has been lost. What’s the use now? “
The AICC fact-finding committee that visited Odisha has submitted its report, she added.
The press conference was attended by Mahila Congress State President Minakshi Bahinipati, MLA Sofia Firdous, spokesperson Dr. Manisha Das Pattnayak, Jayshree Patra, and others.
