The Supreme Court on Tuesday declined an urgent hearing of Patidar leader Hardik Patel’s plea seeking a stay on his conviction so he can contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls.

A bench, headed by Justice Arun Mishra, said there is no urgency in hearing the matter as the High Court order was passed in August last year.

The Top Court asked, “What’s the urgency now.”

A trial court in Mehsana had convicted and sentenced Hardik to two years’ imprisonment for rioting and arson in Visnagar in 2015, during the Patidar quota protests.

The 25-year-old leader moved the Top Court challenging the Gujarat High Court order rejecting stay on his conviction in the case. (UNI)
