Trump calls for new restrictions on US asylum seekers

The White House ordered new restrictions on asylum-seeking Central American families at the southern border including charging them to file their claims and barring them from working in US.

On Monday, US President Donald Trump sent a presidential memorandum to acting Secretary of Homeland Security Kevin McAleenan and Attorney General William Barr, giving his administration 90 days to draw up regulations that would carry out his orders.

“The purpose of this memorandum is to strengthen asylum procedures to safeguard our system against rampant abuse of our asylum process,” the memo states.

The memo also directs immigration courts to settle pending cases within 180 days.

Trump has repeatedly railed against the nation’s immigration system. In 2018, the US president passed a series of measures that made it harder for asylum seekers to pass the credible fear interview, the first step in the process. In November, Trump issued an order requiring anyone, who entered the United States illegally not to be eligible to request asylum, but the ban was rejected by a US judge. (UNI)
