President Ram Nath Kovind on Saturday dissolved the 16th Lok Sabha with immediate effect as Narendra Modi was unanimously elected as the Leader of the BJP parliamentary party and the National Democratic Alliance.The President has accepted the advice of the Cabinet on May 24 and signed the order dissolving the 16th Lok Sabha in exercise of the powers conferred upon him by Sub-clause (b) of Clause (2) of Article 85 of the Constitution.
Earlier, Chief Election Commissioner Sunil Arora, accompanied by Election Commissioners Ashok Lavasa and Sushil Chandra, met the President and submitted a copy of the notification, issued by the Election Commission containing the names of members elected to the 17th Lok Sabha, to him.With the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance stupendous 350+ seats in just concluded general elections, the NDA will be able to form the next government in 545-member House of the People Common. For forming a government, a party or alliance needs to have a simple majority-272 MPs. Mr Modi is the first non-Congress PM to complete the full term. In another first, he will be the first non-Congress PM to be re-elected for the post of the Prime Minister.
In his acceptance speech at the Central Hall of Parliament, Mr Modi made an outreach to minorities and said the vote bank politics over the decades have only played a ‘chhal (deceptive game)’ with the poor and the minorities and the onus is now on the newly-elected NDA regime to work for all sections of the people (Sab ka saath, sab ka vikas).
Mr Modi said, “We have worked for Sabka saath, sabka vikas, now we have to strive for Sabka Vishwas (trust of all).” Before the meeting commenced, Mr Modi walked up to senior leaders and touched the feet of three elders present Lal Krishna Advani, Shiromani Akali Dal chief Parkash Singh Badal and Murli Manohar Joshi.
The name of Mr Modi as BJP Parliamentary party leader was proposed by party president Amit Shah, which was seconded by senior leaders Nitin Gadkari and Rajnath Singh.Mr Modi’s name was again proposed as the NDA leader by SAD patron Parkash Singh Badal, which was endorsed by JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar, Shiv Sena’s Uddhav Thackeray, Lok Janshakti Party’s Ram Vilas Paswan, All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kaghazam co-convenor Edappadi Palaniswami, among other heads of allies.
