wacch Bharat Mission changed attitude of people: Javadekar

Environment Minister Prakash Javadekar and Jal Shakti Minister Gajendra Singh Shekhawat on Wednesday said that Swachch Bharat mission has achieved unimaginable success over the past five years and the biggest advantage was a change in attitude of people towards cleanliness.

Releasing two study reports on the ‘Swachch Bharat Mission’ on the occasion of World Environment Day, Mr Javadekar and Mr Shekhawat said,”when the PM first picked up a broom, nobody had imagines that this programme would achieve such a big success that ten crore toilets would be built in five years.’’

Mr Javadekar said that Mr Modi has the will power to work which the whole country and the world saw .

‘’If there is will power, then one can bring about an ocean of development in the country. This is something that everyone has seen. The Ganga has been dirtied because all the garbage was being thrown in it. However, in the last three years, a lot of work has been done to prevent this which has resulted in the Ganga becoming clean,’’he said.

He said that the biggest achievement is that the initiative taken by Mr Modi on cleanliness has now turned into a Swachch Bharat movement.

‘’There has been a change in attitude of the people towards cleanliness. Because of this movement, thousands of cores of the country have been saved and people’s health has improved. This is a big change. Now, the government has given a slogan of ‘har ghar mein nal se jal’ (water from tap in every home) . People have also recognized its importance. People want to live a better life and their dream is being fulfilled by Swachch Bharat Abhiyan. Hence, I am proud of this movement,’’Mr Javadekar said.

Mr Javadekar said that in the last five years, 1.5 crore houses were built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, three crore electricity connections were given and six core houses got a gas connection.

He said that 10 crore toilets were built in last five years while 18 core farmers got Rs 6,000 per year, and 35 crore people got LED bulbs.
