The unfortunate incident of ‘Mass Hysterectomy of poor women in the Beed district of Maharashtra was raised during Zero Hour in the Rajya Sabha on Friday on which the members sought government’s intervention.
Raising the issue, the Nationalist Congress Party Member Vandana Chawan in Upper House said the poor labourers are being hired by the Sugarcane cultivators through contractors.
These contractors mostly hire the poor couple and they are fined with Rs 500 if one of the partner is absent due to some illness or some other reason, she said.
The women workers were taking 5 day leave during their monthly menstruation period but the contractors and farm owners forced them go for hysterectomy so that they will not need to take leave on that ground.
“The contractors and farmers also gave them advance loan of Rs 20 or 25 thousands for to get their operation done and till the advance loan was not adjusted, the couple had work.”, Ms Chawan said.
The other Members of the House also associated with this issue and demanded the Government to stop this inhuman practice and also demanded penal action against the culprits.
Akali Dal Member Sukhdev Singh Dindsha raised the the issue of return of Holy Books and documents which were not restored to the Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee despite our several requests whereas AICT member Sukhendu Shekhar Roy raised the disinvestment of Bengal Chemical Pharma Company at Kolkata and urged the Government not to dis-invest the Company despite the fact that this is profit-making company.
This is the first and one the oldest chemical factory which was established by freedom fighter Prafulla Chandra Ray. He alleged that the Government is eying on the vacant land of the factory which is situated in the heart of the city.
