The Income Tax Department, Goa, celebrated the 159th Income Tax Day on Wednesday.
Income tax day is celebrated each year to commemorate the day on which Income tax was first levied in India in 1860. As part of the celebrations IT Department, Goa in association with Goa Branch of WIRC of ICAI set up a “Helpdesk for Individual and small taxpayers” at ASK center, Aaykar Bhawan.
The helpdesk was inaugurated by Principal Commissioner of Income-tax Amrapali Das. The main event was held at at Entertainment Society of Goa Auditorium with Varun Sahni, Vice-Chancellor of Goa University as Chief Guest and Vivek Menezes, Writer, and photographer as Guest of Honour.
In the welcome speech, Amrapalli mentioned about the contributions of Goa charge on the exchequer. She also mentioned that the per capita tax collection of Goa was one of the highest in the country.
Speaking on the occasion, Varun Sahni emphasized on the growing geopolitical stature of India and said the prime role IT department played in the rise of the country as a major player in the international arena.
Vivek Menezes in his presentation mentioned about modern and contemporary art with an emphasis on paintings. He also elucidated how fake art was being marketed as the original ones and lack of competency in identifying the originals.
‘This thriving market of millions of rupees needs to be properly identified and the IT department is a prime stakeholder in this,’ he said.
The students of Dhempe College gave a presentation on ‘Innovative use of social and digital media for enhancing voluntary tax compliance’. The Income Tax Department honored non-governmental organizations working for the students. The NGOs honoured were Chetna Charitable Trust, El Shaddai Charitable Trust, Hamara School and The Mango Tree Trust in association with Faber Castle for their work on underprivileged children.
