Downplaying the criticism made by Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor over the delay to appointing a new president for the party, Congress general secretary in-charge of Organisation KC Venugopal, on Monday said that there is ‘no orphaned scenario’ in the party.
Reacting to reporters, Venugopal said that Rahul Gandhi is involving day to day work of the party and he will continue till find a replacement for the post of party president.
“Shashi Tharoor expressed sentiments of a common congressman. However, it is not orphaned scenario. Congress President had stepped down. When he did that he offered to continue until a replacement was found. He has been involved in the day to day party work”, said the Congress general secretary.
Indicating that the Congress Working Committee (CWC), party’s highest decision making body, will be convened soon to discuss the issues and future course of actions, Venugopal called a meeting of all AICC general secretaries and state in-charges on July 31, at 1800 hours.
On Sunday, Tharoor, while responding to questions on the scenario after Gandhi stepped down from the top post, taking responsibility for the poor performance of the Congress in the Lok Sabha polls, has said that there is a lack of clarity at the top of the party and it may hurting the sentiments of Congress workers and sympathisers.
“It is certainly quite true that the lack of clarity at the top of the party is likely to be hurting the Congress workers and sympathisers, many of whom miss the fact of having a party leader to look to for key decisions, authority and even inspiration and energy, to rally together and move forward,” he said.
The Thiruvananthapuram MP also called for elections in all positions of the party, including president and added, “it would help legitimise the incoming set of leaders and give them a credible mandate to lead the party”. (UNI)
