A militant was killed and a soldier injured in an encounter which ensued during a Cordon and Search Operation (CASO) in Sopore in this north Kashmir district on Saturday, official sources said. Mobile internet service has been suspended in Sopore as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours.
They said troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF launched a joint CASO in a village in Sopore following a tip off about the presence of militants. When the security forces were moving towards a particular area, the militants hiding there opened fire. The fire was retaliated, ensuing in an encounter, in which a militant was killed. The operation was still going on when the reports last came in, they said.
Additional security forces and state police personnel were rushed from nearby camps to further tighten the cordon and also prevent any demonstrations. (UNI)
