Pakistan decides to shut down Samjhauta Express

Pakistan on Thursday decided not to continue with the passenger train service with India.

Railways Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed at a news conference said that he will not let the Samjhauta Express that runs between the two countries during his ministership.

“The bogies freed from the train will be added to other trains.” Radio Pakistan quoted him as saying.  The decision was another instance of Pakistani response to Indian actions in Kashmir.

The Samjhauta Express, known as the Friendship Express, is a bi-weekly train that runs from Delhi to Attari and from Lahore to Wagah on the Pakistan side. The train was started in 1976 following the 1972 Simla Agreement. It was earlier reported that the train was stranded at Wagah border on some security concerns.

In New Delhi, Indian Railways,said Pakistan had raised “some concerns with regard to security for crew and guard” of the Samjhauta Express.”We have told them that there is normal situation this side’ Northern Railways said, adding that the train would run.
