People affected by floods in North Karnataka celebrated the ‘Raksha Bandhan’ festival two days early on Tuesday by tying thread on the wrists of Indian Army personnel who came to their rescue while they were stranded in floods that ravaged in 17 Districts of Karnataka during last three weeks.
The affected people were of the opinion that leaving their own life in danger, they rescue people in most dangerous situations. Expressing their gratitude at the Indian Army officials and jawans, NDRF, Karnataka Disaster Management Force and the fire force personnel lent a hand of help.
‘’Their deed is bigger than any gift that a brother can give during Raksha Bhandhan, when I faced threat to my life, pregnant woman, Savitri’’, said after tying Rakhi to an Army officer during a touching moment, how her life was saved. Many women came forward to emulate her.
The rescue team yesterday celebrated ‘Bakri Eid’ festival by having lunch with Muslim men and women at the relief centres. On the occasion of Eid, villagers at Shirgur Taluk, Raibag District, Belagavi, invited Major Rathour and his team for Namaz in a village mosque. Soldiers and villagers had ‘semiyan kheer’ and ‘biryani’ together and villagers thanked Indian Army for their relentless rescue operations that saved the lives of hundreds of stranded flood victims.
The Military rescue team, comprising of personals from Army and Navy rescued thousands of stranded people from the flood ravaged 15 districts in Karnataka. On Monday the team also rescued more than 75 people including 25 foreigners from Veerapura Gaddi in world heritage centre Hampi.
One of the SDRF rescue team comprising of five people had escaped death by a whisper when their dhingie overturned amid swollen Tungabhadra river and they were rescued by the Navy and Army personnel from being swept away by the current.
