Contrary to the general perception that India’s stand on the scrapping of the 370 in J & K, has gained wider support from the international community, including China, the tension assumes momentum post the announcement by the UNSC that it will deliberate on the Kashmir issue.
What is worse that China has reportedly endorsed such a meeting at the UNSC and there are apprehensions that Pakistan may get the Chinese backing on the matter regardless of the fact that Article 370 stands aborogated and India has made it clear to the world community that, Kashmir is an internal issue of India in which the latter will not brook any kind of interference.
Amid escalation of tensions between India and Pakistan, the UN Security Council (UNSC) has decided to discuss the Jammu and Kashmir crisis on Friday. “UN Security Council scheduled closed consultations on Jammu and Kashmir on August 16”, UNSC president for August, Joanna Wronecka told reporters on Wednesday.
Earlier on the day, Pakistan’s close ally China supported Islamabad’s request to hold a closed meeting at UNSC. According to Sputnik, Security Council’s permanent member China had itself requested the UNSC to hold the session. Pakistan Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi had written a letter to the UNSC president, seeking an urgent session on Kashmir issue in wake of New Delhi’s decision to revoke Article 370 that gave special status to Jammu and Kashmir.
The Indian government on August 5 scrapped the special status of Jammu and Kashmir and bifurcated it into two union territories. Since then, Islamabad has continuously accused India and downgraded its diplomatic relations with New Delhi.
