Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) president Thushar Vellappally, who contested against Congress leader Rahul Gandhi under the NDA banner in Lok Sabha election in Wayanad, has been arrested in Ajman by the UAE Police in connection with a cheque bounce case. The leader of BDJS, the second largest ally of BJP-led NDA in Kerala, has been sent to the Ajman Central Jail on Tuesday evening.
According to a complaint filed before the UAE police by Nazil Abdullah, a Thrissur-based businessman settled in Ajman, a cheque of 10 million Dirham, nearly Rs 10 crore, was dishonoured by the BDJS president.
The complainant, who filed the case two days ago, invited Vellappally to a hotel in Ajman for a negotiation meeting on the bounced cheque which was issued to him 10 years ago in connection with the handing over of a company, Boeing Constructions, owned by the family of Thushar Vellappally, to Nazil Abdullah, who was also a sub contractor at that time.
The cheque was given to Nazil without mentioning the date, sources said. Following the arrival of Thushar Vellappally in Ajman, the complainant informed the police who took away him from the hotel.
Sources said efforts are being initiated for the release of the BDJS leader after completing legal formalities including submission of necessary documents related to the case with the help of some prominent businessmen close to BDJS leader and his father Vellappally Natesan, who is also the general secretary of Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana (SNDP).
