If you will drive in a drunken state be sure that you will be held at the toll gates in Odisha and prosecuted.
Odisha Police today decided to check drunken driving in each toll gate and other highly accident prone areas of the state with an objective to reduce the increasing number of road accidents. The checking will be conducted by using breath analyser and the offenders would be arrested and prosecuted as per various provisions of the law.
In a circular, Odisha DGP B K Sharma directed all district Superintendents of Police to check the drunken driving in all the 14 toll gates across the state. Sources said the checking will be carried out in the toll gates of Sheragarh, Panikoili, Dhenkikote, Palaspanga, Ramachandrapur, Pipili, Masunikani, Rajgangpur, Tapanga, Langaleswar, Sasan, Attabira, Balichandrapur and Manguli.
Any one found driving in a drunken state or under the influence of drug will be arrested and fined. The offender would be arrested if alcohol beyond 30 MG per 100 MG of blood is found. The decision was taken as per the direction of the Committee on Road safety constituted by the Supreme Court.
A committee on Road Safety constituted by the Supreme Court under the Chairmanship of Justice Radhakrishnan has directed Odisha to reduce road accident fatality in the state by 10 per cent every year. But despite pro active steps taken by the state, the road accident fatalities in the state went up by 7.33 per cent in 2017 and 11 per cent during 2018. Drunken driving is one of the major factors responsible for most of the fatal as well as grievous accident cases.
The Committee took it seriously and directed the state to prosecute the offenders by imposing fine, imprisonment and suspension of driving license. Odisha government has directed the Police to invoke the legal provisions to contain drunken driving in compliance with the direction of the Committee.(UNI)
