The CBI, probing the Saradha chit fund scam and now looking for the former Kolkata Police Commissioner to quiz him, is yet to locate the elusive IPS officer and ADG CID Rajeev Kumar, who is said to have gone on leave for 17 days since September 9.
The CBI in its attempt to find the IPS officer, has sought his mobile phone number from the DGP, which was yet to get it, sources said as a new 12-member special CBI team began search operation in phases since Wednesday after their arrival from New Delhi.
A CBI team today held a meeting at its office under the directive of a joint director to chalk out the action plan to reach the elusive IPS officer, who once headed SIT that arrested Saradha Group chief Sudipto Sen and confiscated many vital documents, including a red diary.
A separate CBI team today proceeded towards the Alipore court to file a petition of non-bailable arrest warrant. But the case record (file) has not reached there from the Barasat court in North 24 Parganas district after the latter said the case was not maintainable there and advised to go to Alipore court.
The lawyers of the cop had also moved the Alipore court and prayed for its hearing before any judgment was passed.
Armed with Calcutta High court’s Friday order when it vacated its earlier order not to arrest the ADG CID and successive futile attempts by cop’s advocates’ to get the anticipatory bail at the Barasat court and a special court there on Monday, the CBI lawyers have been preparing to move the Alipore court today to get an order of non-bailable arrest warrant against the former Kolkata Police Commissioner.
The CBI is of the firm belief that the elusive cop was now hiding in the city following a reply by DGP Virender to a letter of the investigating agency. The CBI on Monday shot a letter to the DGP requesting to mention if Rajeev Kumar put his address of stay during his leave vacation. Kumar is on leave for 17 days from September 9 and had stated that he would stay in his official residence 34 Park Street.
On the basis of his stated statement in the leave application the CBI believe that the cop might be in his office residence as per reply by the DGP to the query of the probe agency.
However, the CBI taking no chances is expected to move a petition in the Alipore Court in South 24 Parganas to have the elusive police officer in its custody after two courts in North 24 Parganas told the cop’s lawyers that the matter was not in their jurisdiction.
Lawyers of the cop first moved to the MP MLAs special court and then the district sessions judges court in Barrackpore and both said the matter belonged to Alipore court. (UNI)
