In a major fire accident at Aero India 2019 area, at least 80 cars were gutted when fire broke out in the parking lot of the sprawling Yelahanka Air Force Station on the outskirts of the city on Saturday.
There was no reports of causalities or damage to any aircraft as the fire broke out on the opposite side of the Air Station with National Highway bisecting it. No damaged was caused on the Air Force Station side of the area, officials said.
However, the air display by various air crafts during the morning session of the Show has been completed when the mishap was reported by about 1230 pm.
Thick black smoke engulfed the entire area as several cars were seen burning beyond control. At least 500 cars were parked in this parking lot, one of the many designated parking areas earmarked to accommodate thousands of vehicles in which people came to attend the air show. Between 80 to 100 cars are expected to have been destroyed in the fire mishap, Fire Department officials said.
Officials from Fire Services said the fire broke out in the car parking lot and the cause was likely to be a leaking petrol tank of one of the cars. More than 15 fire tenders from Fire Brigade as well as IAF and central police force camp next door rushed to the spot and when latest reports came in the fire was yet to be fully extinguished.
Huge numbers of cars were parked in the parking lot Gate No 5 as public was allowed to witness air show on the last two days beginning today. On the first three days after Aero India began on February 20, only invitees were allowed to attend the Asia’s biggest air show.
The 12th edition of the Aero-India, was marred with the tragic incident of two Surya Kiran aircraft collided mid-air and one pilot was killed in the incident, a day before the Air-show on February 19. (UNI)
