The US House of Representatives has passed a resolution to terminate President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration on the southern border.
The House passed the resolution on Tuesday with a 245-182 vote. The measure now heads to the US Senate for consideration.
Trump declared a national emergency earlier this month to free up $8 billion in federal funding to build a wall on the southern border where the administration claims there is a humanitarian crisis. The president has said the border is needed to prevent criminals and terrorists from pouring into the United States.
Trump declared the national emergency after Congress refused to allocate the $5.7 billion he requested for the wall. The Trump administration aims to divert military funding to install 234 miles’ worth of steel barriers along the country’s 1,950-mile border with Mexico.
