Bhubaneswar: A Central Skill Lab, providing the scope to medical students to learn and hone their skill on mannequins instead of using cadavers in medical colleges, was inaugurated at the Institute of Medical Sciences and SUM Hospital, faculty of medicine of the SOA Deemed to be University here on Wednesday.
Prof. (Dr.) C.B.K.Mohanty, the state’s Director of Medical Education and Training, inaugurated the new lab in the presence of Prof. (Dr.) Ashok Kumar Mahapatra, Vice-Chancellor of SOA, Prof. (Dr.) Gangadhar Sahoo, Dean of IMS and SUM Hospital and Dr. Pusparaj Samantasinhar, Medical Superintedent of IMS and SUM Hospital.
The lab has been established as per the guideline issued by the erstwhile Medical Council of India (presently National Medical Commission) for teaching MBBS students. Prof. Mohanty said this lab would remove the possibility of infection for the students while improving their skill.
The lab would be particularly useful for teaching subjects like Anatomy, Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, Orthopaedics and ENT. Medical students would get trained in the lab from the first year of the MBBS course.
Prof. Prakash Kumar Sahu, Chief Coordinator for Medical Education and in-charge of the new lab, Head of the department of Pharmacology, Prof. Sudhansu Sekhar Mishra, Dr. Ajay Kumar Jena, Additional Dean, Dr. Rajesh Kumar Lenka, Additional Medical Superintendent, departmental heads and faculty members were present at the inaugural function.
