In a view to strengthen the Congress in Uttar Pradesh ahead of 2022 assembly elections, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has decided to meet ground-level workers from eastern part of the state two days a week in the national capital.

Gandhi Vadra was made the general secretary in charge of eastern Uttar Pradesh weeks before the Lok Sabha elections.

Sources said that Gandhi Vadra, would be interacting with the party workers between 10 am to 1.30 pm every Tuesday and Thursday. The party workers could meet her without any formal appointment. She will also visit the state in order to connect with the grassroots-level workers and a blueprint of the visit is being worked upon.

During her first visit to Raebareli on Wednesday after her mother Sonia Gandhi won in the Lok Sabha elections from there, she came down heavily on the party workers for not working in favour of the party in the general elections. The Congress leader has also told the party workers to be ready for the fight ahead.

Gandhi Vadra had campaigned hard for party candidates in Uttar Pradesh, but the Congress won just one Lok Sabha seat, Raebareli, where Sonia Gandhi won. In the other Congress stronghold of Amethi, Gandhi Vadra’s brother and Congress president Rahul Gandhi lost to the BJP’s Smriti Irani.

Congress is at the lowest ebb in Uttar Pradesh after the Lok Sabha poll debacle. Sources said Gandhi Vadra would concentrate more to rebuild the party organisation in the state, which sends maximum number of MPs to Parliament. The Congress leadership is also of the opinion that getting power in Delhi is difficult without electoral success in Uttar Pradesh.
