Emergency Freedom Fighters: The Odisha government has announced that freedom fighters imprisoned during the country’s Emergency period under MISA, DIAR, and DIASAIR laws will receive a monthly pension of ₹20,000. Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi had earlier made a declaration regarding this. Today, the Home Department officially issued a notification on the matter.
In addition to the pension, the state government will also cover the medical expenses of all freedom fighters. All freedom fighters who are alive as of January 1, 2025, will be eligible for this pension and medical benefits. It is noteworthy that from June 25, 1975, to March 21, 1977, many freedom fighters were imprisoned in various jails across the country for opposing the Emergency declared during that period.
A high-level meeting was held today under the chairmanship of Additional Chief Secretary to the Home Department, Shri Satyabrata Sahu. The meeting focused on preparing an accurate list at the district level of individuals who were imprisoned in various jails of the state under the MISA, DIR, and DISIR laws during the Emergency period.
Shri Sahu interacted with all District Collectors and SPs (Superintendents of Police) through video conferencing. It was discussed that applicants would need to submit an application in the prescribed format to the concerned District Collector and District Magistrate. Along with the application, relevant documents, the names of three prominent co-prisoners, and an affidavit confirming their detention under MISA, DIR, or DISIR laws in Odisha during the specified period must be submitted as proof.
