New Delhi, Dec 7 (UNI) Speakers paid rich tributes to the freedom fighter Jayee Rajguru (Jaykrushna Mahapatra), one of the earliest heroes of India’s war of Independence, known as the Khurda uprising of 1804 in Odisha.
At a function at the Jagannath temple in Hauz Khas in the national capital by the Shaheed Jayee Rajguru Foundation, dignitaries including former CEO of Prasar Bharti, Suresh Chandra Panda, spoke about the valour and courage of Rajguru, who led the revolt against the British and how his sacrifice has inspired many others to fight for freedom colonial rule.
At the event, attendees sang patriotic songs and elaborated on the life of Jayee Rajguru.
A book, ”Khurda Bidrohara Samartha Sarathi Jayee Rajguru” , was also launched in his memory.
Jayee Rajguru, who led the what is in Odisha known as “Paika Bidroha”, was executed by the British on Dec 6 1806. Every year on that day, he is remembered by the people.
The Odisha government has been demanding recognition of Paika Bidroha (Paik Rebellion) as the first War of Independence, and not the Sepoy Mutiny that took place in 1857.
