U S poll finds 6 in 10 believe country heading in wrong direction

More than six in 10 US citizens believe their country is heading in the wrong direction, while nearly seven in 10 gave negative opinions on the state of the country, a poll found.
The poll, released by NBC News/Wall Street Journal on Sunday, showed that 63 percent of respondents said the United States is heading off on the wrong track, while 28 percent say the opposite.
Records showed that the percentage of people who believe the country in the right direction is the lowest since July 2016.
When asked how the state of the United States should be described today, 68 percent of respondents gave negative words and phrases, the most common ones include “wrong track”, “disaster/hard times”, “parties undermining each other/no compromise.”
The poll, which was conducted before the White House struck a deal with the Democratic Party to reopen the government, showed that public opinion on U.S. President Donald Trump had remained largely stable. It is unclear if agreeing to reopen the government without extracting border wall funding from Congress had damaged his support among his base voters.(UNI)

Venezuelan crisis: European countries send Maduro major ultimatum

In an ultimatum to Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro, Britain, France, Spain, and Germany have said they would recognise opposition leader Juan Guaidó as interim president unless he calls for elections.
In tweets published on Saturday, the leaders of France and Spain, Emmanuel Macron and Pedro Sanchez, said they would recognise Guado as “president in charge” if Venezuela is not given free elections, said an Euronews report on Sunday.
“The Venezuelan people must be able to freely decide on their future,” said Macron, as did German government spokeswoman Martina Fietz.
“If within eight days there are no fair, free and transparent elections called in Venezuela, Spain will recognise Juan Guaidó as Venezuelan president”, said Sanchez.
In a statement, the EU’s foreign police chief Federica Mogherini also urged for Venezuela to hold free, transparent and credible presidential elections “in accordance with international democratic standards and the Venezuelan constitutional order.”
“In the absence of an announcement on the organisation of fresh elections with the necessary guarantees over the next days, the EU will take further actions, including on the issue of recognition of the country’s leadership in line with article 233 of the Venezuelan constitution,” she said. (UNI)

Facebook-Whatsapp-Instagram messaging infrastructure to be unified: NYT Report

Soon a Facebook user will be able to send an encrypted message to someone who has only a WhatsApp account as Facebook Inc Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg is planning to unify the underlying messaging infrastructure of the WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook Messenger services and incorporate end-to-end encryption into these apps.
The three services will, however, continue as stand-alone apps, the New York report said, citing four people involved in the effort.
Facebook said that it is working on adding end-to-end encryption, which protects messages from being viewed by anyone except the participants in a conversation, to more of its messaging products, and considering ways to make it easier for users to connect across networks.
“There is a lot of discussion and debate as we begin the long process of figuring out all the details of how this will work,” a spokesperson said.
Integrating the messaging services could make it harder for antitrust regulators to break up Facebook by undoing its acquisitions of WhatsApp and Instagram, said Sam Weinstein, a professor at the Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law.
“If Facebook is worried about that then one way it can defend itself is to integrate those services,” Weinstein said.
But Weinstein said breaking up Facebook is viewed as an “extreme remedy” by regulators, particularly in the United States, so concerns over antitrust scrutiny may not have been a factor behind the integration. (UNI)

Chidambaram takes jibe at Jaitley, rebukes CBI in ICICI Videocon loan case

Senior Congress leader and former home minister P Chidambaram on Sunday took a jibe at Union Minister Arun Jaitley, rebuking CBI for naming top banking officials in FIR in the ICICI-Videocon loan case.
In a post on social media, Mr Chidambaram said, ”CBI has received the ultimate certificate from the one, who has the best ring-side seat, the Finance Minister (on leave): ‘Adventurism and megalomania have overtaken investigators’!.”
In a blog, Mr Jaitley cautioned the CBI against ‘investigative adventurism’ on Friday, a day after the agency named a string of top bankers in an FIR lodged against former ICICI Bank CEO and MD Chanda Kochhar, her husband Deepak Kochhar and Videocon Group MD Venugopal Dhoot.
”Sitting thousands of kilometres away, when I read the list of potential targets in the ICICI case, the thought that crossed my mind was again the same – Instead of focusing primarily on the target, is a journey to nowhere (or everywhere) being undertaken? If we include the entire who’s who of the banking industry – with or without evidence – what cause are we serving or actually hurting,” Mr Jaitley wrote in the blog on Friday. (UNI)

Ram temple issue: Next week crucial for Ayodhya

With Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath claiming that his government can solve the vexed Ayodhya issue within 24 hours if allowed by the court, the coming week would be crucial for the Ram Temple movement, as the Supreme Court is likely to start hearing of the case from January 29.
The apex court had constituted a five-Judge Constitutional bench, which will hear into the decade-long pending title suit, commencing from Tuesday.
However, all eyes are on the slated Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP)-sponsored Dharam Sansad, to be held at Prayagraj during the Kumbh on January 31 and February 1, to fix the future strategy on the construction of Ram temple.

The importance of Dharam Sansad could be assessed with the expected presence of BJP president Amit Shah and other senior party leaders.
VHP Spokesperson Sharad Sharma told UNI here on Sunday that Ram temple would be the main issue during the two-day Dharam Sansad, to be held at VHP’s camp, situated in Sector 14 of Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj.

According to Mr Sharma, though several senior leaders of the Sangh Parivar have been invited in the Dharam Sansad, but confirmation was yet to be received from many of them.
He, however, made it clear that RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat, along with other RSS functionaries, were slated to attend this Dharam Sansad.
A senior BJP leader also said told this agency that Mr Shah could attend the Dharam Sansad, since he is slated to visit Lucknow on January 30, to attend a meeting of the booth committees in UP.

Meanwhile, the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister sparked another controversy, when he announced that his government can solve the Ayodhya issue within 24 hours, if permitted by the court.
In an interview with a private news channel on Saturday, Mr Adityanath made it clear that people were losing patience on the delay over the construction of Ram temple.  “I appeal to the Supreme Court to give its verdict in the case at the earliest,” he said, while adding that if the court fails to give a judgement, then it should hand over the case to the UP government, which will solve it within 24 hours.

The UP CM made it clear that Ram temple is not a political issue, but directly related to the peoples’ faith.(UNI)
