Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday said he had no animosity against the seven life convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case.
Replying to a question on the demands for their release as they have completed more than 27 years in prison, Rahul said “as far as assassination of my father…legal issue should take its course.”
”We have no animosity towards anyone”, he added.
It may be noted that leaders of various political parties in Tamil Nadu were demanding for their release.
Even the Tamil Nadu government adopted a Cabinet resolution and forwarded it to Governor Banwarilal Purohit recommending their release, based on Supreme Court’s observations in one of the convict Perarivalan’s plea for early release, under Article 161 of the Constitution.
But the Raj Bhavan was yet to take a decision and Opposition parties also questioned the delay over the Governor taking a decision on the issue.
Perarivalaln’s mother Arputhammal, who had also petitioned the Raj Bhavan, said she had confidence that the Governor will soon order the release of the convicts, in line with the decision of the Cabinet and the Supreme Court order.
The State Cabinet had on September nine, 2018, adopted a resolution recommending to the Governor to release all the seven convicts under Article 161 of the Constitution.
The decision, recommending to the Governor to release all the seven convicts–Sriharan alias Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan alias Arivu, Nalini, Robert Pyas, Ravichandran and Jayakumar,
who were languishing in jail for the last 27 years–was taken in line with the September six Supreme  Court order.
Based on the Apex Court order, which had asked the Governor to consider the mercy plea of Perarivalan for premature release, the Cabinet recommended to the Governor to release all the convicts under Article 161 of the Constitution.
A Bench of Justices Ranjan Gogoi, Naveen Sinha and K M Joseph had on September six disposed  of a plea filed by the Centre opposing the State government’s proposal for the release of the convicts, and asked the Governor to consider the mercy plea of Perarivalan.
Reacting to media reports on the issue, the Raj Bhavan had on September 15 denied the reports and said a just and fair decision would be taken in accordance with the Constitution. The Raj Bhavan said it was a complex case and involves examination of legal, administration and Constitutional issues and the papers would be processed scrupulously.’
”All efforts will be taken to process the papers scrupulously. Necessary consultation may be carried out, when required, in due course”, it said and added that the decision would be taken in a just and fair manner and in accordance with the Constitution. (UNI)
