A day after Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had made an attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the rising unemployment rate in the country, party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala on Wednesday alleged that Modi government is the single biggest destroyer of jobs and future of the youth.
Addressing mediapersons at AICC headquarters, the Congress leader said joblessness and unemployment is at a 45 year high under Modi government.
“Economic growth is at a five year low, farm income growth is at a 14 year low, fresh investments are at a 14 year low, private investments are at a seven year low, industrial growth is at a low of 1.7 percent (down from 7.5 percent, a year ago), household savings are at a 20 year low, FDI growth is at a five year low, core sector growth is at a two year low, growth of exports (compared to UPA) has fallen by 15 times”, Mr Surjewala said.
On Tuesday, Mr Vadra, in her first political rally after being appointed as party general secretary in-charge of UP (East) slammed Modi government and stated “ask the people who made tall promises in 2014 about the women safety and employment.”
“Jobs are the single biggest crisis facing India’s youth”, said Mr Surjewala and added that as per CMIE’s survey, unemployment rate has touched 7.2 percent and as per National Sample Survey Office (NSSO) report, unemployment rate is at 6.1 percent.
“Unemployment rate for the youth is at an alarming high level of 13-27 percent. This is the highest in last 45 years”, he said.
Furthering his allegations, the Congress spokesperson said that demonetisation alone cost 1.5 crore jobs and plunged the GDP by 2 percent costing small and medium businesses as much as 3 lakh crore.
“Coupled with a flawed GST, businesses perished and jobs destroyed”, he said.
Quoting CMIE report, Mr Surjewala said India lost 1.1 crore jobs in 2018 alone and 91 lakh jobs were lost in rural India while the loss in urban India was 18 lakh jobs.
“Over 88 lakh women lost their jobs in the last year, accounting for over 80 percent of the total job loss. Rural India accounts for two-thirds of India’s population, but it accounted for 84 percent of the job losses”, he said.
He also alleged that Modi Government exuded the virtues of a MUDRA loan but failed to tell the people that average size of MUDRA loans for 91 percent beneficiaries is a mere Rs 23,000.
“Will anyone be able to open a ‘pakora stall with this paltry sum of money? An RTI reply refused to answer the basic question of ‘how many jobs were created under the MUDRA scheme’. Colourful phrases like ‘Skill India’, ‘Start-up India’ and ‘Stand-up India’ have all vanished from Mr Modi’s speeches. According to official figures, the placement rate of ‘Skill India’ is a meagre 14.7”, said Mr Surjewala.
He further said that Modi Government has destroyed the Informal sector, agricultural sector and MSME’s where 90 percent of jobs are created.
Mr Surjewala claimed that Congress is committed to putting the agriculture sector, informal sector and MSME’s at the centre of its job creation agenda.
