Pahalgam Terrorist Attack: Security has been significantly tightened across the Kashmir Valley in the wake of a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, which claimed the lives of several tourists. The incident occurred approximately 85 kilometers from Srinagar, in South Kashmir’s Anantnag district.
A large-scale joint search operation is currently underway, involving the Indian Army, Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) and Jammu and Kashmir Police. The operation has been extended to a 5-kilometre radius around the site of the attack. Special forces, sniffer dogs and advanced technical surveillance tools have been deployed in an effort to apprehend those responsible.
To prevent further incidents, security forces have established additional checkpoints on major highways and in vulnerable areas. Quick Reaction Teams have been stationed near strategic locations, including key infrastructure and popular tourist destinations. Frisking procedures have been intensified in Srinagar as well as in tourist hubs such as Gulmarg and Sonamarg. Enhanced security arrangements have also been made around hotels of all sizes accommodating tourists.
Northern Army Commander Lieutenant General M.V. Suchindra Kumar is expected to receive a detailed briefing on the prevailing security situation from senior field commanders in Srinagar later today.
Authorities report that the final casualty count is still being confirmed, as rescue and identification operations are ongoing. The attack striking at the height of the spring tourist season has prompted serious concerns among officials and stakeholders in the region.
