Pahalgam Attack: In the wake of the recent terrorist attack that claimed the lives of 26 civilians near the popular tourist destination of Pahalgam, widespread outrage has prompted a call for a complete shutdown in Jammu on Wednesday.
The Jammu Chamber of Commerce and Industry (JCCI) and the Bar Association of Jammu (BAJ) have jointly announced the bandh, urging businesses and civil society groups to observe a day-long closure as a mark of protest against the brutal attack.
JCCI President Arun Gupta confirmed the shutdown, stating the move aims to send a strong message against terrorism and express solidarity with the victims and their families.
Condemning the incident, the BAJ issued a statement calling the attack a “senseless and inhumane act of violence” that underscores the persistent threat to peace in Jammu and Kashmir. “This barbaric act targeting innocent civilians is a grim reminder of the need for collective resolve against terrorism,” the statement read. The association reiterated its commitment to the rule of law and fundamental human rights, urging all citizens to unite in defiance of terror.
The Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) has also supported the bandh, calling on the public to maintain a peaceful shutdown. JKPCC Chief Spokesperson Ravinder Sharma said the move is necessary to demonstrate unity against the rising tide of terrorism in the region.
Meanwhile, the Jammu and Kashmir Youth Congress staged a candlelight march led by General Secretary Anirudh Sawhney, joined by senior leaders including former MLA Yogesh Sawhney and IYC Secretary Maan Singh.
“The recurring civilian killings reflect a deep security lapse,” said Yogesh Sawhney. “Accountability must be upheld at the highest levels.”
The collective actions underscore growing frustration across civil and political spheres over escalating violence and the perceived lack of effective security measures in Jammu and Kashmir.
