Indian Railways has deployed Artificial Intelligence (AI) enabled Intrusion Detection System (IDS) using Distributed Acoustic System (DAS) for detecting presence of elephants on Railway tracks.
Proactive Coverage and Pilot Implementation
* The AI enabled Intrusion Detection System has been implemented in 141 RKms section on Northeast Frontier Railway to prevent elephant collisions.
* The system has been successfully functioning, and based on its performance, further tenders have been awarded for 981 RKms for implementation across Indian Railways.
* With this, the total coverage will extend to 1,122 RKms.
How the System Works
* The system generates real-time alerts for loco pilots, station masters and Control Rooms about the movement of elephants in proximity of railway tracks, enabling timely preventive action.
* AI-based cameras to alert loco pilots 0.5 kms in advance.
Part of Ongoing Wildlife Protection Efforts
* Indian Railways has been taking continuous efforts to prevent wildlife casualties, particularly elephants, on railway tracks through technology-based solutions.
Commitment to Safety and Conservation
The deployment and expansion of the AI enabled Intrusion Detection System using Distributed Acoustic System (DAS) reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to wildlife conservation and safe train operations.
