Lone Orangutan in Nandankanan Zoo dies of acute pneumonia

The aged Orangutan of Nandankanan Zoo, suffering from the cold and age-related problem for the last three days, passed away due to acute pneumonia last night.
Nandankanan Zoo Deputy Director Jayant Das said the only Orangutan of the Zoo, was brought from Pune Zoo in 2003 at the age of 25 years, died due to acute pneumonia and hepatitis.
He said as per preliminary post-mortem report by the experts from Veterinary college, the death of 41 years old female Orangutan was due to acute pneumonia and hepatitis.

Mr Das said the tissue samples were collected for further investigation to correlate the cause of death.
The animal was under long term treatment for one year by the experts from the College of Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry OUAT under constant advice of the Orangutan experts from UK and Singapore.
Zoo sources said efforts would be made to bring two more Orangutan either from Singapore or United Kingdom.
