SC to hear Congress plea on June 19 for simultaneous polls to Rajya Sabha

The Supreme Court will on Wednesday hear a petition challenging the Election Commission’s decision to hold separate bypolls to two Rajya Sabha seats in Gujarat on July 5.

State Congress leader Pareshbhai Dhanani had moved the Court against the decision of the Election Commission (EC) to hold separate bypolls on two Rajya Sabha seats which fell vacant after the elevation of BJP leaders Amit Shah and Smriti Irani to the Lok Sabha.

A vacation bench, headed by Justice Deepak Gupta, said, ‘We will hear the petition tomorrow. The matter is important.’

Senior Supreme Court advocate and Member of Parliament (MP) Vivek Tankha, appearing for Dhanani, mentioned the matter for urgent hearing in the case, to which the court said, would hear the matter tomorrow.

‘Such manoeuvring’ by the BJP and the EC to suit their political agenda actually amounted to a “death knell to the democracy,” Mr Dhanani claimed in his petition and sought an urgent hearing into his case.
