SC convicts 12 people in Haren Pandya murder case

The Supreme Court on Friday convicted 12 people for killing former Gujarat Home Minister Haren Pandya on March 26, 2003.A two-judge bench, headed by Justice Arun Mishra, restored the sessions court’s verdict holding them guilty.

The apex court nixed a plea for a court-monitored fresh investigation in the case.

The top court imposed a fine of Rs 50,000 on the NGO, Centre for Public Interest Litigation (CPIL) for filing the petition and said no further plea will be entertained in the case. Pandya was shot dead in Ahmedabad when he was on a morning walk.

The Sessions Court had convicted and sentenced all the 12 accused to life imprisonment in the case. Later, they had moved the Gujarat High Court challenging the Session’s Court’s order.

The Gujarat High court had acquitted them all, after which the CBI knocked the doors of the Apex Court challenging the High Court order.
