Cabinet approves amendment of National Institute of Design Act, 2014

Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Wednesday approved amendment to National Institute of Design Act, 2014, to designate “Principal Designer’ as equivalent to Professor and to correct the anomaly in this regard.

The National Institute of Design (Amendment) Bill of 2019 will be introduced in Parliament, said Union Ministers Prakash Javadekar and Piyush Goel.
With aim to professionalise, standardise and internationally benchmark professional design education in India, and to take full advantage of opportunities, the government decided to amend section 27 of the NID Act, 2014.

“Granting the status of Institutions of national importance (INI) to new NIDs will ensure that design education becomes socially inclusive and address the needs of design in various sectors, including agriculture, health care, transportation, rural housing, rural and urban sanitation and many other sectors of the Indian economy”, the Ministers said.

The Act will ensure that design education in the NIDs all across the country has uniform guidelines and design pedagogy.
