A total 71 tillers’ suicides were reported in Madhya Pradesh between December 1, 2018 and June 12, 2019; Home Minister Bala Bachchan informed the Assembly on Monday.
In a written reply, the Minister averred, “The highest number of cases in a single district was 14 in Sidhi, followed by 13 in Sagar.”
In the context of the sexual assault-homicide of an eight-year-old in the state capital during June, he said that no action is pending against higher law-enforcement officers in that and a similar crime perpetrated in Ujjain.
“Personnel were placed under suspension after they appeared to be prima facie guilty of not displaying sensitivity and promptness as per the minor’s relatives’ expectations when they alerted Kamlanagar Police Station on June 8. At that juncture Station House Officer Alok Shrivastav was on leave,” Mr Bachchan said.
