Gandhinagar: More than 2,700 cases of rape were registered with the Gujarat police in 2018 and 2019, which amounted to at least three rape cases per day in the state, according to the state government.
As per replies to various questions raised by Congress MLAs in the state assembly, Minister of State for Home Pradeepsinh Jadeja informed the House that during 2018-2019, there were 2,723 cases registered by the police for rape and gang rapes in the state.
The maximum number of cases were registered in Ahmedabad with 540 rape cases in two years. Surat had the second highest with 452 cases followed by Rajkot with 158, and Banaskantha district with 150 rape cases.
The least number of cases were reported in the tribal district of Dang, where nine such cases were registered in the past two years.
Congress MLA from Dariyapur Gyasuddin Sheikh said, “Rape cases are increasing in a state where the government is known for giving the slogan ‘Beti Bachao Beti Padhao’. I request that the victims should get some financial aid from the CM relief fund.”
