Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz said on Sunday that he was “shocked” by the synagogue shooting in California, extending his condolences to those affected by the attack.
A 19-year-old man opened fire on Saturday at a synagogue in the Californian city of Poway, located in the vicinity of San Diego. The attack left one person killed and three others injured, including the synagogue rabbi and a female minor. Poway Mayor Steve Vaus qualified it as a hate crime. The shooter was detained.
“I am shocked about the attack on a #synagogue in #SanDiego on the last day of passover. My heartfelt condolences go to those affected. We need to continue fighting #antsemitism [antisemitism] and protect the right of all to worship in #safety,” Kurz wrote on Twitter.
An open anti-Semitic letter was posted online several hours before the attack by a user, who called himself John T. Earnest. This name reportedly coincides with the name of the shooter. The author of the letter pointed out that he had started preparations for the attack shortly after the Christchurch mosque shooting.
