Canada started their 2019 Women’s World Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Cameroon, Kadeisha Buchanan scored the winner on the stroke of halftime.
Canada dominated the first half but could not find the net before the break.
In the 43rd minute, Allysha Chapman squared for Nichelle Prince whose shot was blocked by the defender. Then on the resulting corner, Buchanan steered her header into the net on Janine Beckie’s set up.
Canada still had the chance to extend the lead on 89 minutes, yet Christine Sinclair saw her attempt cleared off the line by Claudine Meffometou.
Canada set to meet Australia on June 15 while Cameroon will take on the Netherlands.
