Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palaniswami on Tuesday mounted a scathing attack on senior Congress leader P.Chidambaram by describing him as a ‘burden on earth.’
“ Chidambaram has done no good for the State and he is just a burden on this earth,” Palaniswami said while answering a query on the Congress veteran’s remarks that the AIADMK would not oppose it even if Tamil Nadu was made into a Union Territory like Jammu and Kashmir.
The Chief Minister said, despite being a Central Minister for long, Chidambaram had not brought any welfare schemes for Tamil Nadu. As Union Minister, what schemes he brought for the welfare of the State, Palaniswami asked.
Did he allocate necessary funds to the State when he handled Finance portfolio. Were new industries were brought to the State. Did he at least take necessary steps to solve inter-State water disputes like Cauvery, he questioned. Palaniswami said Chidambaram was only concerned about his interests and not that of country and hence he was rejected by the people.
Referring to AIADMK’s support to the abrogation of Article 370 granting special status to Jammu and Kashmir, the Chief Minister said AIADMK’s stand was in line with late Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s stand 35 years ago.
Jayalalithaa, who was a Member of Parliament in 1984-89, while participating in a debate in the Rajya Sabha on July 26, 1984 asked the Centre “why the delay on integration of Jammu and Kashmir into the Indian Union, why not bring it under the purview of the Constitution of India in conformity with all the other States of the Indian Union.
