Photovoltaic panels will be installed to employ solar energy at Santiago’s Comodoro Arturo Merino Benitez International Airport, Lucas Palacios, Chile’s vice minister of public works said.
Some 3,000 photovoltaic panels will be installed to take advantage of the clean energy to “illuminate passengers, workers, and all who pass through the airport,” Palacios said.
The new installations will reduce the airport’s carbon dioxide pollution by more than 500 tons every year.
The initiative is a part of the preparations for the 25th session of the Conference of the Parties (COP25) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, which will be held in Chile’s capital Santiago on Dec 2-13.
The current terminal will benefit from the installation of 2,500 panels, which will begin operating in December.
They will generate an annual average of 1,256 megawatts per hour, equivalent to the consumption of more than 500 homes in Santiago.
