Coach Malik held on charge of molesting woman boxer

New Delhi: Delhi Police has arrested former Indian boxer and coach Sandeep Malik on charge of molesting a woman player during a boxing championship in West Bengal, a senior police officer said on Tuesday.

DCP (Railways) Harendra Kumar Singh told IANS: “The 19-year-old complainant, a member of the Haryana boxing team, went to Kolkata to participate in Classic Boxing Championship 2020, where Malik allegedly misbehaved with her. She filed a complaint at the New Delhi Railways Station Police Station after returning from the championship.”

According to the complaint, the team travelled to Kolkata on February 27 from New Delhi through Duranto Express. From the beginning of the journey, Malik began to allegedly misbehave with her and his behaviour continued throughout the championship. As the woman could not share her ordeal with anyone, she tolerated these things.

But once she returned to Delhi on March 13, she filed a complained with New Delhi Railway Station police. Before registering the case, police got recorded her statement before a Magistrate.

“Malik was arrested on Monday from Haryana’s Sonipat where he lives and runs a boxing coaching centre,” said Singh.

He has been booked under Sections 354-A (teasing) and 376 (rape) of the IPC, the officer said.

Malik is a native of Lalhedi Kalan in Sonipat district. He is married and has two children. He had represented India on many occasions.
