While maintaining a safe distance from either praising Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan for his ‘gesture’ or mentioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi for exerting pressure on the neighbouring country over the release of the captured Indian Pilot, Wing Commander Abhinandan, the Congress on Thursday welcomed his release and praised his ”incredible bravery in the face of uncertainty”.
”We are deeply relieved to hear that Pakistan government will be releasing Wing Commander Abhinandan Varthaman and he will be back in India shortly. We salute his incredible bravery, in the face of uncertainty,” said the party’s official Twitter handle.
However, Congress National Spokesperson Sanjay Jha took a different tone and said ”Let us acknowledge the fine gesture of his (Abhinandan) quick release by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khän.”
Lashing out at the ‘war-mongering’ TV anchors, he tweeted, ”Wing Commander Abhinandan will be back home tomorrow. That is great news. Let us acknowledge the fine gesture of his quick release by Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khän. And to the suited-booted overpaid intellectually emasculated dim-witted war-mongering TV anchors, get a life.”
Taking on BJP, another Congress leader and former Union Minister Rajiv Shukla tweeted in Hindi, ”Hearty congratulations on Abinandan’s ghar vaapsi tomorrow. Saluting all those who, instead of garnering votes for BJP, prayed for his release.”
Earlier, former Chief Ministers of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday welcomed the Pakistani Prime Minister’s announcement that captured Indian pilot Wing Commander Abhinandan will be released on Friday, with PDP chief Mehbooba Mufti even describing the cricketer-turned-politcian as a ‘statesman’.
Meanwhile, the Congress on Thursday slammed Mr Modi for interacting with BJP workers to strengthen the party’s electoral booths, “at a time, when the nation waited to hear him,” in the backdrop of escalating tension between India and Pakistan. (UNI)
