Cong protest march against CAB in Assam Assembly

Guwahati, Dec 5 (UNI) The Opposition Congress today took out a procession in the Assam Legislative Assembly premises against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill (CAB).
Leader of the Opposition Debabrata Saikia, his deputy Rakibul Hussain and former minister Ajanta Neog led the protest.

The Congress MLAs walked through the corridors of the Assembly building and marched to the entrance of the Floor of the House, carrying a banner decrying the CAB and raising slogans. They demanded scrapping of the CAB and implementation of the Assam Accord in letter and spirit.

Saikia said, “The BJP had assured the people of Assam that they will not bring in CAB and implement the Assam Accord. But they have clearly violated their promise.”

“The Congress will never tolerate anything that goes against the interest of the people of the state,” he added.
Protests across Assam have intensified after the Central Cabinet cleared the CAB yesterday, with the Bill likely to be tabled in the Parliament next week.

The Bill proposes to grant Indian citizenship to persecuted religious minorities from select neighbouring countries.
