More than 70 workers of the Congress party were arrested on Thursday when they attempted to take out a rally to condemn the arrest of former Union Minister P Chidambaram in the INX Media case.
The congress workers, led by senior leader and party spokesperson Gopanna, assembled in front of the TNCC headquarters Sathiyamurthy Bhavan and attempted to take out a march to Anna Salai, when they were arrested by the police.
All the arrested were taken in a police vehicle and lodged in a marriage hall.
Talking to reporters, Gopanna strongly condemned the arrest and termed it as an act of political vendetta. He said Chidambaram’s name did not figure in the FIR and blamed the BJP-led NDA government at the Centre for misusing the CBI to arrest him.
They also shouted slogans denouncing the Central government. Similar demonstrations were held in other parts of the state to condemn the arrest. (UNI)
