The Delhi Commission for Women has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding an ammendment in the Triple Talaq bill to include sections against Nikah, Halala and Polygamy.
DCW chief Swati Maliwal on Thursday upheld Government’s move of criminalising Triple Talaq, however, expressed dissapointment over the fact that the Government has addressed one part of the issue.
Requesting the Prime Minister she has asked to rather inlcude the provisions criminalising, Nikah, Halala and Polygamy in the same bill which has been introduced in the Lok Sabha.
She expressed hope that the government will take immediate action on this recommendation of the Commission and shall ensure that a comprehensive bill is passed in Parliament.
There is no place for such evil practices in a civilized society where women are given equal status she said, further questioning that when countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, Turkey and several others have already banned instant triple talaq, then why not in our country.
‘These practices are an assault on the right to equality for women guaranteed by the Constitution’, she said.
It is physical abuse without the consent of the woman she said refering to Halala and further said practices like Polygamy are against giving basic respect as a human being to women.
In many cases it seen that the second man refuses to give divorce to the woman and she is then forced to live with another man. This is a vicious cycle of torture and trauma for the woman entailing nothing but physical and mental abuse.
