Decision to call off match between New Zealand and Bangladesh supported by ICC

The third Test match between New Zealand and Bangladesh
that was scheduled to begin Friday has been called off following a shooting attack
in Christchurch.
The decision to call off the match has been supported by David Richardson, the
ICC chief executive.
Mr Richardson said “Our thoughts and sincere condolences go out to the families
and friends of those affected by this horrendous incident in Christchurch.”
“Both teams, staff and match officials are safe and the ICC fully supports the
decision to cancel the Test match,” the ICC chief executive said in a statement.
Meanwhile, New Zealand Cricket confirmed the players and staff of both teams
were “safe and accounted for” before they released an official statement
confirming the abandonment of the Test.
“On behalf of NZC, heartfelt condolences to those affected,” David White, the
chief executive officer, said. “We’ve cancelled the game. I’ve spoken to my
counterpart at Bangladesh cricket – we agree it’s inappropriate to play cricket
at this time.”
“Both teams are deeply affected,” White said. “As a country, we’ll have to look
at security of visiting teams. It seemed to be a safe haven. I’m sure all of New
Zealand will take a look at their approach.”
