New Delhi, Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh on Monday congratulated nobel laureate Prof Abhijit Banerjee and said “it gives immense pleasure and pride to know that you are now the second Indian to recieve a Nobel Prize in Economics, after my dear friend Prof Amartya Sen.
In a letter to Prof Banerjee, he also congratulated Esther Duflo and said, “I am delighted to know that your wife Esther Duflo is also a winner jointly of this Nobel Prize for economics”.
“MY heartiest congratulations to you and your co winners. Your scholarly work on poverty alleviation and development of new techniques such as Randomised Control Trials are truely path breaking”, the former Prime Minister said.
Dr Singh, also a noted economist, further said, that “I am particularly pleased, as a student of ecomomics, that the Committee chose to honour pioneering innovations in development economics that are very applicable and useful to policy making in developing countries such as India.”
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and former Congress president Rahul Gandhi had also congratulated Mr Banerjee and other winners.
