If things move forward as planned, Kerala will have 2000 free-of-cost Wi-Fi hotspots in public places, Government office premises and selected coastal areas across the State by state formation day on November 1. This prestigious project of the State Government is being implemented as part of its K-Fi project, Sources said on Friday.
K-Fi is a cost-free Wi-Fi providing project being implemented by the government to ensure reaching out the benefits of Information Technology. That apart, the project also envisages dissemination of other government services and information accessible and transparent to the public.
Out of the targeted 2000 Wi-Fi hotspots, as many as 1887 is being facilitated at various places across the State. A project of the Kerala State Information Technology Mission (KSITM), the free wi-fi is being made available at bus stands, civil stations,state government office premises, public parks, panchayat offices and other public places. That apart, the facility is also being made available at the coastal areas.
The KSITM is an autonomous agency that comes under the Department of Information Technology of the State Government, set up with the aim to promote digital innovations in the State. And one of the major objectives of the KSITM is to empower the people of the state by giving them digital access to information and e-services.
Citizens can access upto 300 MB of free internet per day from these hotspots using their smartphones mobile devices of laptops by identifying themselves with mobile numbers. The tourists can also avail information on destinations, hotels and ticket bookings etc using these hotspot services. The speed of this facility would be upto 10 Mpbs, the Sources added.
The Railways has already been providing free internet services to passengers at select railway stations in the State and is being spread to more stations. (UNI)
