A militant was killed by security forces on Sunday in an encounter in the central Kashmir district of Badgam, official sources said.
He said troops of Rashtriya Rifles (RR), Special Operation Group (SOG) of Jammu and Kashmir police and CRPF acting on a tip-off about the presence of militants at village Bugam, Badgam, launched a joint search operation early on Sunday morning.
All the exit points were sealed and house-to-house searches launched. However, when the security forces were moving towards a particular area in the village, militants hiding there opened indiscriminate firing with automatic weapons.
Troops also retaliated ensuing in an encounter. A militant was so far killed, official sources said, adding the operation was still going on when the reports last came in.
Meanwhile, internet service was suspended in Badgam as a precautionary measure to prevent rumours.
