NATO is not planning to deploy new ground-based nuclear weapons in Europe even after the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty (INF) becomes invalid following US withdrawal, NATO Deputy Secretary General Rose Gottemoeller said Wednesday.
“We will now discuss how to respond to new Russian missiles. But we have no plans to deploy new ground-based systems with nuclear weapons in Europe,” the official told Sueddeutsche Zeitung ahead of the meeting during which the alliance would discuss possible steps to take after the INF suspension.
