The New York Times newspaper apologised for an anti-Semitic cartoon about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and US President Donald Trump, published in their international edition.
The cartoon, which appeared in Thursday’s newspaper, depicted the Israeli prime minister as a guide dog with the Star of David on its collar and the US president as a blind man in traditional Jewish clothes, who is guided by the “dog.”
“The image was offensive, and it was an error of judgment to publish it. It was provided by The New York Times News Service and Syndicate, which has since deleted it,” the editor’s note posted on the Twitter page on Saturday said, adding that the cartoon included “anti-Semitic tropes.”
The American Jewish Committee (AJC) has refused to accept the apologies, describing it as “naked anti-Semitism.”
“Apology not accepted. How many @nytimes editors looked at a cartoon that would not have looked out of place on a white supremacist website and thought it met the paper’s editorial standards? What does this say about your processes or your decision makers? How are you fixing it?” the AJC tweeted.
